Steven Sproat Talks Ukulele with John Tribe

General, Interviews

Anyone who aspires to play ukulele in the last decade will certainly have stumbled across or maybe even skimmed through a copy of the ‘Absolute Beginners¬† Ukulele’ by Steven Sproat along with and usually right next to ‘Big Dummies Guide To The Ukulele’ by Alistair Wood. A short while ago I managed to interview Steven at his home and learn more about how a player from the wilderness ukulele era in Britain managed to enjoy all aspects of the Ukulele and go on to become a songwriter and teach some household names how to play the ukulele. Any student who wants to get an insight into George Formby skills without cleaning windows can learn a lot from this man.

His pupils have included Sir Tom Courtenay, Harry Hill, Frank Skinner and Nicky Campbell. Unbeknown to me before meeting Steven we both played at ‘Raglan Music Festival’ in 2009 where he played with Nicky Campbell. He has recently published a new track ‘Too High Too Quickly’
